Meet 17 Women Who Mean Business

Meet Abby Curtis and Alex Stark, Lifelong Friends and Yoginis

Hair Warrior was created by lifelong friends and yoginis, Abby Curtis and Alex Stark. Both women sought to fill a need in the marketplace — a hair product designed to target athletes, sports enthusiasts and fellow yoga practitioners like themselves. Both Abby and Alex share a passion for fitness and yoga, but have struggled with their hair’s health after pursuing activity every day. With a team of chemists and hair stylists behind them, Abby and Alex created Hair Warrior.

FullSizeRenderOctober is breast cancer awareness month.  This is a cause that is dear to my heart my mother passed away nearly 7 years ago due to a rare form called inflammatory breast cancer. Most people are aware of the the breast

cancer that appears with a lump or shows up on a mammogram.  Most people are unaware of this type of breast cancer.   Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a rare and very aggressive disease in which cancer cells block lymph vessels in the skin of

the breast. This type of breast cancer is called “inflammatory” because the breast often looks swollen and red, or “inflamed.”  Inflammatory breast cancer accounts for 1 to 5 percent of all breast cancers diagnosed in the United States. Most

inflammatory breast cancers are invasive ductal carcinomas, which means they developed from cells that line the milk ducts of the breast and then spread beyond the ducts.  Inflammatory breast cancer progresses rapidly, often in a matter of weeks or

months. Inflammatory breast cancer is either stage III or IV at diagnosis, depending on whether cancer cells have spread only to nearby lymph nodes or to other tissues as well.  Inflammatory breast cancer can be difficult to diagnose. Often, there is

no lump that can be felt during a physical exam or seen in a screening mammogram. In addition, most women diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer have non-fatty (dense) breast tissue, which makes cancer detection in a screening

mammogram more difficult. Also, because inflammatory breast cancer is so aggressive, it can arise between scheduled screening mammograms and progress quickly.

I was unaware of this type of cancer until my mother had it.  If by being aware now that inflammatory breast cancer exists maybe it will save a life.   Since breast cancer is something that hits home for us we will donate 15% of all sales

of Hair Warrior during the month of October to breast cancer research. xo Alex

Alex & I have discussed how wonderful it is that she begins each of her yoga classes with a simple touch to each person.  What a beautiful gesture it is to let each of her students know that before they begin their practice knowing that their personal energy helps make them an integral part of that yoga class. That their presence matters.

Sometimes it is those small gestures that impact us for the rest of the day or even better resonate with us far longer. It is that sense of touch that helps bind us together.  I think that is what is so amazing about the practice of yoga. Yoga seems to embrace touch, both physical and mental, unlike many other form of exercise.  Where many forms of exercise are a competition of sorts, yoga is not.  It is about getting in touch with what you need , what your body needs and what your mind needs.

The message or inspirational words during  the beginning and the end of the practice touch and nurture the mind. The messages help set intentions, seal in a practice and clear the mind.  It is a perfect “vacation” for a few minutes from a hectic day ahead or the one you’re leaving behind.

Who will you touch today?  What will you be in touch with?  Where will you be in touch?  So many questions but, maybe touch lets us and reminds us that we care and are cared for.  That we matter in someway.  Touch connects us to each other.  Creating, strengthening that relationship we have with ourselves and one another.

We wanted to let you know that you have touched Alex and I.  We appreciate your love and support for Hair Warrior.  Thank you for believing in Hair Warrior.

During the summer months my yoga classes tend to be a bit smaller.  There are many reasons for the decline in numbers. I know that when weather the changes people to want to spend their time enjoying and taking advantage of outdoor activities.  Also, this is the time of year children  are home from school and the parents cannot find the time or child care to practice at the studio or go to the gym.  This time of year people tend to go on vacation and their exercise routine seems to be compromised in one way or another.

I love teaching. As a teacher it doesn’t matter if it is a small class or a large class.  The vibe and energy in summer is especially amazing.   Summer seems to have a different feeling than any other time of year. People seem more relaxed and just all around happier. This is the time of year you can put away your phone for a few days, slow down, get out of the regular routine and, enjoy the lazy hazy days of summer.  Basically, it is a time to hit that pause button.

I encourage you to take the time to make memories for yourself and those that you share with others.  This is my favorite time of the year.  To me, it is the time of year I can find that quiet, personal time. It is a time of self reflection. A time that I can stop and truly inhale and exhale. A time to get caught up on all those things that I seem never to have enough time to do.  The ‘want to” things like reading that book, watching those DVR’d shows, catching up with old friends, and yes, even cleaning out the closet and that pesty junk drawer.

For those that are lucky enough to sneak away and enjoy a few days on holiday this summer, we want to remind you that Hair Warrior has a convenient travel size option.  We are so excited and honored to share with all of you that Pathfinders Travel Magazine has featured  Hair Warrior as one of their top travel products for Summer 2015 . So, when you are packing up and throwing in those last minute necessities into your overnight bag, don’t forget to pack your Hair Warrior.

Whatever are in your plans this summer, enjoy, relax and be safe.  Let us know how you spent your summer. 🙂

Don’t forget your Hair Warrior while traveling

I am the co-owner of Hair Warrior but I also teach yoga.  This week I am sharing with my students the importance of happiness.  Many studies have found people would rather be happy than have money.  It sounds easy but how is it done.  First off  each morning when you wake you make a conscious choice to be happy.  You tell your self I am happy 🙂  Our brain tends to focus on the negative but if you focus on the positive you begin to see more positive.  I know that when faced with a tragedy or severe illness it is difficult however, most days are just regular days. So tell yourself this is a great day.   Then before you doing anything write down 3 things you are grateful for at this moment in life.  It has been shown that the most grateful people are the happiest people.  Next, do a random act of kindness each day.  Think about when you do something kind to someone it makes you and the receiver feel amazing.  Lastly do what you love and love what you do.  Abby and I created Hair Warrior because we found there was a need for the product.  However, we love what we do therefore;  it is a passion verse a job.   It is so important to make someone happy then you will be happy too.

Hair Warrior

As you are sweating up a storm, make sure to have a warrior on your side…Hair Warrior, that is! This innovative product is like an energy drink for your hair – it hydrates, protects, reduces frizziness, prevents color from fading, and adds shine, body, and softness. Containing botanical and essential oils, you apply it to dry hair before you exercise, and the heat your body generates, activates the Hair Warrior, locking moisture in each individual strand of hair. We even tried it on wet hair, blowing it dry, and found our hair soft, smooth and healthy looking. A great natural product to protect our hair!
